Eleven weeks of rain, and the garden is still producing – incredible! The tomatoes may be dying in the glasshouse, the cucumbers turning up their toes, the root crops in danger of running to seed (they think they’ve just been through winter), but good old spinach thrives on the cool climate and long daylight hours. And we’re thriving on it – spinach omelette for breakfast, creamed spinach on toast for lunch, and spinach quiche for dinner. Yum!
Having given up on summer ever arriving (I’ve just returned from a walk on the beach dressed in gloves, hat, polar-fleece jumper, jacket, woollen socks, long-johns and overtrousers) we’ve planted out our leeks and have gone into winter vege gardening mode. The poor old rhubarb thinks it really is winter, and has started to die back, as you can see from its drooping leaves.
Things can only get better and, meantime, the garden still looks great – don’t you think so?
